INTERVIEW BY MERCY BARON, BARON’S BBQ BEAT
Ben Powell is a one man force to be reckoned with, putting forth old style blues and original compositions. Herewith are his thoughts on our questions…..
What is the most interesting place that you’ve ever performed?
The most interesting place I’ve performed, possibly, was the very tip top of Mammoth mountain outside with the snow and a 360 panoramic view. Wondrous nature!
What are some of your favorites spots to perform in San Diego?
Favorite local places to play change over time but club wise, the Belly Up… Nice staff and shows and I like Nate’s Garden Grill in City Heights, again really nice staff, good food and crowd.
Who inspires you?
I am primarily inspired by my friends and peers, people who work hard and can make art for a living. I am also inspired by activists, people who work to make positive change for things that can’t stand up for themselves like animals or our environment. And of course some famous classics like Blind Blake, Django Reinhardt and Bob Marley.
What’s your favorite food?
I am a vegetarian so I mostly love beans, greens and fruits…simple food at home. Out, I love Thai, Indian, and Italian.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I am seemingly always thinking about music…melodies or ideas for songs, so kind of always working on that. Or I just love walking down to the beach or hanging in the back yard when I’m not working.
