INTERVIEW BY MERCY BARON, BARON’S BBQ BEAT
XANDRA bills herself as a contemporary pop artist and has played all over the world. She has quite the diverse background and is also involved in dance and movement.
What is the most interesting place that you’ve ever performed?
By far, the most interesting place I have ever performed was in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I was contracted as a singer in a 7-piece cover band. We played at the Jazz Bar inside the Hilton Hotel, which was built in 1973 and was Abu Dhabi’s first hotel in United Emirates.
What are some of your favorites spots to perform in San Diego?
I still have lots of music venues to explore, but so far my favorite spot has been The Kraken. It is such an iconic San Diego venue, and so many great artists play on that stage. The vibes are always good in there, and the crowd and staff are the best! Some people don’t know this, but I am also a classically trained dancer and have performed in that modality on many other stages around San Diego. Some of my favorite theaters to perform in include Escondido Performing Arts Center, Spreckles Theater, and Avo Playhouse.
Who inspires you?
So many people! So many things! Where do I start? These are just some of my most significant musical inspirations: Prince, Erykah Badu, Lady Gaga, Dave Matthews Band, Etta James, Melody Gardot and Janis Joplin.
What’s your favorite food?
Depends on my mood. But I always love a good San Diego burrito. And sushi!
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Spending time with my family and loved ones is a big priority for me. I am also continuously finding new ways to expand my creativity and deepen into my personal expression. I’m a bit of a health nut so I really love learning about breakthroughs in science and medicine. I love being close to Nature so I garden a lot and cook healthy meals at home. I regularly practice dance, yoga and meditation. I read all sorts of things, I write frequently (especially in my gratitude journal), I listen to music and talk to my friends about new ideas. I am constantly manifesting the next steps for myself and looking for opportunities to create magic in the world.
